  • Looking up Pillarcove you can clearly see two grassy ramps exiting. You're aiming for the right-hand one.

  • The hidden valley of Pillarcove.

  • Rising up Scarth Gap (in winter, you're best doing this pre-dawn to gain daylight on the higher sections)
    LakeDistrict-Pillar-01 FPH05A0001_68...jpg
  • You could head up towards Robinson's cairn for slightly better views (like this and over the High Stile Range) but the detour adds significant time and over-ascent to the route. But in winter the described route wins for speed.

  • A nervous moment - crossing the "Bad Step" in dry conditions.

  • Pillar Rock's south face still stands proud, if rather less imposing than its North face!

  • Look out for slickensides - the sideways slippage marks where rock has ground against rock on a fault line, giving naturally polished areas – on Shamrock Terrace

    Trail-AJC19028base120PS.JPG
  • Experienced scramblers may find it more enjoyable to go out on the wall instead of staying in the groove - but a slip from here is likely to be fatal
    Trail-AJC19031base103PS.JPG
  • The scramble follows a clear groove for most of it's length
    Trail-AKF24007base120PS.JPG
  • Fantastic view over Stickle Tarn from the small ledge by the first rowan tree
    Trail-AKF24011base120PS.JPG
  • Exiting individual sections of the groove often prove slightly awkward!
    Trail-AKF24016base120PS.JPG
  • On wet days, novices should avoid the route, and even experienced parties may benefit from a confidence rope and a small amount of protective gear.
    Trail-AKF24018base120PS.JPG
  • An unusual flake of rock adds to the photogenic qualities from a higher ledge
    Trail-AKF24020base120PS.JPG
  • The exit is technically simple but the bottom of this section is very exposed and can be very greasy in damp conditions
